Once a keyset has been generated from hardware you are authorised to use, the practical question becomes how to keep it consistent and reasonably protected. This guide covers handling at that level. It does not tell you where to obtain one.
Store it where your tool expects it
Most recognition failures are placement failures. Applications differ in where they look for a keyset, and many will not search for it at all. Confirm the expected location from the tool’s own documentation rather than assuming a convention — see emulator & frontend configuration for why this varies.
Keep an unmodified original
Retain the file exactly as generated. Because there is no integrity check, an accidentally edited copy is indistinguishable from a corrupted one, and without an untouched original you cannot tell which happened. Back up the original before any tool touches it.
File permissions
On a desktop system, restrict the file to the user that needs it. A keyset has no reason to be world-readable, and on shared or synced machines that distinction matters.
Do not sync it to the cloud casually
Backups are good; indiscriminate synchronisation is not. If a keyset ends up in a synced folder, a shared drive or a backup service you do not control, you have distributed proprietary material without meaning to. Decide deliberately where the file lives.
Never paste it anywhere
Forums, chat channels, pastebins and online “checkers” are all places a keyset should never appear. If you need help diagnosing a problem, describe the error and the structure — not the contents.
Regenerate rather than repair
If a keyset is wrong, the correct fix is almost always to regenerate it from the original source, not to patch individual entries. Regeneration gives you a file whose provenance you know. Patching gives you a file of unknown provenance, which is exactly the situation this site warns about.
This site does not distribute keysets. The handling advice here assumes you generated the file from hardware you own and are authorised to use. It is not an invitation to obtain one from anywhere else.
